History of the Chassiron Lighthouse

Originally, in 1685, a 33-meter tower was built to serve as a landmark for maritime military missions to protect Rochefort. These missions were carried out through apertures that had to be illuminated. In addition, shipwrecks occurred on the island’s northernmost coast.

A lighthouse was therefore needed to light the way for sailors. This 33-metre tower, known as the Colbert Tower after the man who ordered its creation, was lit by two wooden fires. This type of lighting was deliberately chosen to distinguish the tower from other nearby lighthouses.

Assets

In 2007, the lighthouse underwent a major tourist revolution. The surrounding gardens were redeveloped and a museum was built on the second floor of the lighthouse. So enjoy your visit.

In 1834, due to the now obvious inefficiency of the Colbert tower, the Chassiron lighthouse was built and commissioned in 1836. From the latter date onwards, the lighthouse was equipped with all the lighting technologies of the day. Until 1905, the lighting lamps were constantly upgraded, until today they are 250W metal halide lamps. In 1926, the lighthouse was still all white. But from that year onwards, another difference was made, with the headlamp painted with three black stripes.

Visit the Lighthouse

Located in the commune of Saint-Denis d’Oléron, the Chassiron lighthouse rises to 46 meters. Its eight beams of light can be seen from over 50 km away! The lighthouse was built in 1886 to protect the important maritime traffic close to the coast, and has been classified as a historic monument since 2012.

A not-to-be-missed family visit to the northern tip of the island of Oleron, also known as the “tip of the end of the world”, with its 224 steps leading to the summit. From here, you’ll enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Ile de Ré, the Ile d’Aix, the mythical Fort Boyard, the coastline of La Rochelle, the Antioche beacon and the north of the Ile d’Oléron.

Automated since 1998 and completely refurbished in 2007, the lighthouse opens its rotunda, the former warden’s apartment on the 1st floor, which has been converted into a museum. This show tour on the theme of coastal people between land and sea will introduce you to the life of the people of Oleron through audio guides, models and traditional objects.

Created in 2007, at the foot of the Chassiron lighthouse, its contemporary compass rose garden has been awarded the “Jardin Remarquable” label. Both a contemporary and a classic garden, with vegetable garden, vineyard and 21 varieties of roses, it is open to the public. Attractive and fun, with its 4 ponds, sight glasses, audio terminal and turntables, you’re sure to have a great time!

Various guided tours on the history of the Pointe de Chassiron and the marine environment, fish locks, edible seaweed and rocky foreshore, are offered all year round. Night tours are organized in summer.
