The salt marshes are a real surprise in every season and at every time of day.
They offer a mosaic of shapes and colors.
The marshes are divided into two zones:
The Guérande salt marshes around the Traict du Croisic, covering 1,650 hectares in the communes of Batz-sur-Mer, Guérande and La Turballe.
The Mès salt marshes, beyond the Guérande hillside, cover 350 hectares in the communes of Mesquer-Quimiac, Saint-Molf and Assérac.
The area is supplied with water by the Traict de Mesquer.
The salt marshes of Guérande have been shaped by the hand of man for centuries. The 2,000 hectares have been awarded the “Site Remarquable du Goût” label, and you can visit this unique site with a guide or on your own. Bring binoculars, and you’ll be able to observe a wide variety of local birds.
A little history… Thanks to the first written accounts, we know that the technique of exploiting the marshes predates the 9th century.
The last saltworks in the basin were built around 1800, but from the early 19th century onwards, the industry was gradually abandoned in the face of competition. Today, production is low, but producers focus above all on providing a high quality culinary salt.
